About Us

VONNE is the regional infrastructure body for the voluntary and community sector (VCS) in the North East of England. We represent over 600 charities, voluntary organisations, community groups, networks and social enterprises from across the region. Why not join us and become a member?

VONNE's mission is to ensure that the voluntary and community sector plays a full part in the life of the North East.

Our aims for 2008-2011:

  • Excellent Communications - The VCS in the region is well-informed, with effective routes for communication and information-sharing in, among and about the sector.
  • Constructive Relationships with Stakeholders - External partners understand, respect and value VCS organisations and the roles they play, including VONNE's role as the lead regional VCS agency.
  • Thriving VCS - The North East region has a strong, sustainable and thriving voluntary and community sector.
  • Organisationally sound - VONNE is operating efficiently and sustainably.

Key facts about the voluntary and community sector

Research over the past few years has shown the contribution of the voluntary and community sector to the economic life of the North East region.  The headline figures are:

  • the VCS is responsible for at least approximately £1bn worth of the region's economic activity measured by GVA (Gross Value Added), 4% of region's total GVA.
  • voluntary and community organisations employ 40,800 people in the equivalent of 23,200 full-time posts (4.4% of the region's workforce)
  • at least 143,600 volunteers are active in voluntary and community groups, working around 29 million hours per year - the equivalent of 15,000 full-time posts
  • the sector assisted people an estimated 16 million times in 1999
  • the sector is making a significant contribution to key areas of regional policy including the development of an adaptable and highly skilled workforce
  • a key role for the sector is empowering communities to help themselves
  • volunteers and paid employees within the sector make a contribution worth 3.8% of the North East's Gross Domestic Product
