About the North East Assembly
The North East Assembly provides a voice for the region, both nationally and internationally. It brings together elected members of all 25 local authorities in the region, with stakeholders representing a wide range of other sectors including business, culture, trade unions, faiths, education, rural, health, voluntary, and the environment, and has a wide variety of roles including:
- being the regional planning body providing the statutory planning framework for the region;
- ensuring that One NorthEast is accountable to the region;
- being responsible for the North East Housing board;
- making sure strategies across the region are integrated to provide maximum benefit for the people of North East England;
- providing a strong voice for the region, lobbying for changes both nationally and internationally, bringing wide ranging opportunities to North East England; and
- bringing people together and enabling space for debate on issues affecting North East England.
VCS representation on the North East Assembly
The voluntary and community sector has two seats on the Assembly held by Lyn Boyd, Mental Health North East and Mike Hill, Darlington Citizens Advice Bureau.
The role involves:
- attending plenary meetings of the Assembly
- joining the Economic & Social Partners - the group of non-local authority representatives who provide a broader voice on the Assembly.
This is a critical time for the Assembly. The Sub-National Review that Government carried out last year proposes that the Assemblies will be abolished in the next few years and most of their powers transferred to the Regional Development Agency (One NorthEast). The VCS representatives can play a crucial role in making sure that the voice of the sector continues to be heard over the coming years.
