Volunteering

This page contains useful links for whether you want to volunteer or manage volunteers. VONNE is funded by Volunteering England to provide the secreteriat for England Volunteering Development Council in the North East.

Interested in Volunteering?

If you'd like to get involved in volunteering then the best place to go is your local volunteering centres of which there are 17 in the North East. There they have charities registered with them with volunteering places and they can match you up to what you'd like to do. If you are a charity or voluntary group looking for volunteers they have lists of volunteers ready to be matched up.

Becoming a volunteer trustee

Charities and voluntary groups rely on boards of trustees to lead the organisation. If you are considering becoming a trustee or would like to recruit one take a look at our leadership section which has list of helpful resources and links.

Volunteering while on benefits

Contrary to popular belief you CAN volunteer whilst in receipt of benefits or other social security. The Directgov website has a guide to this at the link below. Jobcentre Plus has produced a leaflet (PDF 371kb) giving more detailed advice.

Do you manage volunteers?

If you manage or work with volunteers there are a number of useful volunteering networks operating in the North East you may wish to get involved with.

England Volunteering Development Council

The England Volunteering Development Council (EVDC) represents and advocates for volunteering. It engages both with government and opposition parties in order to capture the collective intelligence of volunteer-involving organisations, volunteering infrastructure providers and of volunteers to provide a powerful, coordinated lobby to steer government policy and community action.

There are ten bodies of the council in total: a national body and nine regional bodies, one being in the North East. VONNE provides the secreteriat for the North East council which is chaired by Kelvin Rushworth.

North East Volunteers

North East Volunteers (NEV) is a growing network of north east volunteering involving organisations, pathfinding new and innovative ways to employment and upskilling through the north east's thriving music scene, industrial heritage, museums, sports opportunities and may other "cultural assets".

This network consists of over 170 agencies, supported by Novas Scarman, providing events, signposting, advice and guidance with a weekly e-bulletin. To subscribe to the NEV e-bulletin, or find out more, contact Julie Dawson or Guy Nokes on 0191 5146156 or email julie.dawson@novasscarman.org

North East Volunteering Infrastructure

North East Volunteering Infrastructure (NEVI) is the constituted group of volunteer centres across the North East. Lindsey Wright from 2D (CVS for Teesdale and Wear Valley) is the current chair of NEVI and can be contacted through 2D.
