Engagement and Empowerment
Central to VONNE’s Communities brief is the role of effective engagement and empowerment in developing a strong voluntary and community sector (VCS). Community engagement is the process of involving people in decisions that affect them. This can mean involving communities in the planning, development and management of services. Or, it may be about tackling the problems of a neighbourhood, such as crime, drug misuse or lack of play facilities for children.
Empowerment is often the outcome of community engagement activities. Empowerment helps strengthen the voice individuals and groups, and increases their sense of their own ability to exert influence. VONNE’s Communities Policy Officer looks after two areas of work related to improving community engagement and empowerment; the regional Community Empowerment Network Coordinators’ Network and the North East Empowerment Partnership.
