Building a charity hub at Mea House

I joined VONNE in May 2019 as the Coordination and Development Support Officer for MEA House. Through a previous role at Northern Creative Solutions I became passionate about community building in the VCSE sector so jumped at the opportunity to apply for this new, exciting role.

I’m currently working to develop and deliver a programme of activities and initiatives to support the charity tenants of MEA House and to also increase their impact through collaboration and community building. Along with this, I’m aiming to maximise the use of MEA House’s assets as a charity hub for the North East.

My first two months were spent setting up meetings with tenants to introduce myself and get to know them. During this time I conducted a tenant census to gain a better understanding of what tenants would like to see to help foster a sense of community, as well as finding out their ideas for collaborative opportunities and for MEA House as a charity hub.

So far I have been happy to set up CommuniTEA, our monthly tenant tea morning; be part of our first Mini MEA Sale in collaboration with Smart Works; present my research findings to tenants; set up a monthly e-bulletin to keep tenants up to date with their neighbours; ensure regular tenant drop-in sessions and more!

Some of the initiatives I’m currently working on include a ‘library of shared things’, a skills time bank, a rotating donation point at reception and MEA House’s own eco council.

I’m looking forward to working more with the amazing VCSE organisations that call MEA House home and seeing these groups working together to create a thriving community right in the heart of Newcastle.

The MEA House twitter is now live, follow us at @MEAHouse to keep up to date with developments and find out what our tenants are up to, or contact me at
