VONNE Annual Conference and AGM 2019

Climate Emergency: A North East Gathering

Climate change is the defining issue of our time and civil society in the North East has a great duty, and a great opportunity, to be at the forefront of the response to climate change.

VONNE's Annual Conference 2019 aims to assist the region's voluntary, community and social enterprise sector in being part of that response.

Keynotes

Peter Stark: Building a North East Climate Coalition

Over the last few months Peter Stark has been working with VONNE to explore and initiate a potential North East region wide response to the three core challenges of climate emergency, ecological breakdown and the just transition. In this introductory address to the conference, Peter will cover the uniqueness of the climate action challenge and the uniqueness of the North East narrative and their role in framing our collective response.

He will then share the journey that VONNE and our partners have been on over the last few months, and the key ideas that have emerged from member consultations. Finally, Peter will share our plans for the next stage of development between now and December to engage the VCSE sector, young people and others to build a collective vision for the North East in 2030 and explore how the region could develop a programme of activities to start us on the road to that vision in 2020 and 2021.

Anna Taylor - Co-founder of UK Student Climate Network

Anna, who studies history here in Newcastle, is 18-years-old and last year, inspired by Greta Thunberg's protests outside Sweden's Parliament, co-founded the UK Student Climate Network, a student-led environmental organisation made up mainly of under 18s that have been calling for peaceful school strikes since February this year as part of the Youth Strike 4 Climate movement, with the ambition of getting the Government to take action.

Their strikes have seen thousands of students across the UK either leave or not go to school on one Friday each month, helping give the issue a global platform. Anna, who also describes herself as a feminist and a mental health advocate, now organises the group's strikes in the North East region, having started the movement in London, and earlier this year, met with Greta Thunberg, other UK youth strikers, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, the Green Party's Caroline Lucas, and Liberal Democrat Vince Cable among others, for the first cross-party climate talks of their kind in more a decade.

Following the keynotes, a World Cafe-style conversation and thematic roundtables will lead to the creation of a set of actions for VONNE and the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector in the North East. You will also hear from Climate Action North East about their work to re-wild the region.

Ahead of the event, we want to hear from members about the things you're doing in your organisation on climate change. Whether it's through your purchasing, greening your office or re-wilding, if you'd like to share what you're doing get in touch.

With thanks to our partners
