One of the things we hear regularly through Going Green Together is that environmental sustainability can end up sitting with one person. You might be really motivated to make changes, but getting colleagues, senior leaders or trustees involved can be a different story.

If that sounds familiar, this workshop on 'Engaging Staff and Trustees in Environmental Sustainability' is for you

Thursday 17 September
10–11.30am
Online

We’ll start the session by looking at this from a staff team perspective, drawing on what we’ve learned through Going Green Together about engaging colleagues and building shared responsibility for environmental action. We’ll explore some practical ways to start those conversations and help sustainability become something more people across your organisation feel part of.

We’ll then be joined by Colette Harrison, Sector Support Manager at Community Foundation North East, who will help us take that conversation further into leadership and governance. Together, we’ll explore how environmental sustainability can become part of wider organisational conversations, from strategic priorities and decision-making to the role of trustees and boards.

As Colette says: “Climate is the responsibility of every organisation.”

For environmental sustainability to become part of how an organisation operates, it needs to move beyond the responsibility of one person and into wider conversations about priorities, strategy and decision-making.

Colette brings more than 25 years’ experience of working in the charity sector in the UK and Europe. She currently oversees Community Foundation North East’s Trustee Match programme, supporting trustee recruitment to strengthen boardroom dynamics and bring new voices into decision-making.

During the session, we will explore:

  • why climate matters in governance

  • how to integrate climate into strategic conversations

  • how to embed climate within organisational strategy

  • the role of trustees and trustee recruitment

  • practical next steps you can take in the short and medium term, and at your next AGM.

The aim isn’t to give you another long list of things you should be doing. It’s to help you think about how responsibility for environmental sustainability can be shared more widely across your organisation, coming away with practical actions to apply in your organisation.
