New Guidance to NHS England Commissioners to Strengthen Patient and Public Participation
NHS England have published new guidance to strengthen patient and public participation in NHS England’s direct commissioning activities. The frameworks provide practical guidance on the best ways to involve patients and the public and include good practice examples and links to resources and voluntary and community sector organisations to support participation.

Delivering sustainability and transformation plans
Sustainability and transformation plans (STPs) have been developed in 44 footprints across England, with the aim of transforming care in line with the NHS five-year forward view. A King’s Fund report looks in detail at the content of the 44 STPs and the opportunities and challenges for implementation. The report is accompanied by a short briefing that discusses the seven key opportunities and challenges facing the STPs.

New report brings together data on drug misuse
An annual report that brings together information from a variety of sources to give a joined-up picture of drug misuse has been published by NHS Digital. Statistics on Drugs Misuse 2017 draws together information about drug misuse by adults and children from a number of sources including NHS Digital's hospital episode statistics.

Tackling high blood pressure through community pharmacy report
Pharmacy Voice, with the support of Public Health England (PHE), has published a report on the important contributions of community pharmacy teams in the prevention, detection and management of high blood pressure. The report provides examples of campaigns, locally commissioned services and work place-based initiatives that could inspire other pharmacy teams, commissioners and primary care colleagues.

Report highlights alarming level of readmission for COPD patients
A new report from the Royal College of Physicians shows that 43% of patients admitted for hospital treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were readmitted at least once in the three months following discharge, up from 33% in 2008. COPD is responsible for 5% of annual deaths globally, is the fifth biggest killer in the UK and is the only major cause of death that is on the increase

Saving STPs: achieving meaningful health and social care reform
A report from the Reform think tank identifies three key barriers to STPs being successfully implemented and outlines a series of changes to overcome them. It argues that engagement with the plans are dominated by CCGs and NHS providers, with input from other parties being limited. It also finds that mixed messages regarding the focus of STPs from national bodies and a lack of leadership have left STPs struggling with the challenges of reform and implementation

Care Quality Commission produces New models of care registration guidance
The Care Quality Commission has published a registration update for vanguards and other new care models.

Care Quality Commission completes first round of inspections
The Care Quality Commission has completed its programme of inspecting all adult social care services and GP practices in England that were registered before 1 October 2014.
In total, including inspections which have been carried out in response to risk, CQC carried out over 30,000 inspections across adult social care services and over 8,000 inspections of GP practices

State of the health system: beds in the NHS
A British Medical Association (BMA) report looks at the causes and consequences of bed pressures within the health system. The report finds that in England, average bed availability has decreased over the past 30 years, with mental health beds seeing a large decline.

Osteoporosis care pathway developed by NHS Right Care
NHS Right Care has developed a new resource which uses a case study of a patient to illustrate their experience of the care they receive.
The document is intended to help commissioners and providers understand the implications of shifting the osteoporosis care pathway from an uncoordinated and reactive approach to a proactive evidence-based approach.

NHS England has produced a short film co-produced with people with a learning disability and designed to be as accessible as possible. The film aims to tell people about NHS England and why patients and the public might want to get involved in its work.

New Report Calls for Needs of People with Learning Disabilities and Dementia to be Better Addressed
A report prepared by Voluntary Organisations Disability Group (VODG) focuses on how best to support the growing numbers of people with the condition. The publication is based on recent work with care providers aiming to improve the quality of life of people with a learning disability and dementia.

New Online Course for Transforming Learning Disability Services
An on-line course run by NHS England has commenced for anyone working to transform care and support for people living with a learning disability, autism or both. The course covers all aspects of transformation, such as High Impact Actions, finance, workforce and housing. Each module has a mixture of video training, some written materials, wider resources and live sessions. The course allows participants to learn online at their own pace - completing the whole course or dipping into individual sessions, whatever suits them.

Coalfields Community Investment Programme Now Open
The Coalfields Community Investment Programme (England) is a £500,000 fund created to support activities that tackle some of the key challenges that remain in coalfield communities. The fund is open to projects that deliver in the top 30% most deprived coalfield communities and that will make a positive difference in addressing skills development, employment and health.

National Clinical Institute for Excellence (NICE) produces a new quality standard for preventing falls in older people through conversation
NICE has advised health and care professionals to talk to older people about falls. NICE says routine appointments with family doctors, at hospital, or during home visits by social care workers, can prevent falls, disability and loss of independence.

NICE seeks to support new mothers with mental health problems
National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) is calling on general practice staff to assess the mental health of all women who have recently given birth. NICE suggests that the routine six-week postnatal appointment could provide an opportunity for new mothers to be asked about their mental health.

Consultation on congenital heart disease
NHS England has launched a public consultation on how it will put in place new standards for hospitals providing congenital heart disease services in England.
The consultation, which runs for 16 weeks from 9 February to 5 June 2017, aims to gather as many views as possible from patients, families and clinical experts and will include face to face meetings around the country, webinars and an online survey.

NHS Newcastle Gateshead CCG invites you to the next Gateshead Local Engagement Board (LEB) meeting. The agenda includes an update from the Director of Nursing, Patient Safety and Quality, and a discussion on forming a patient group to support the development of community services.
