North East Criminal Justice Forum - Alternatives to Custody, Engagement not Enforcement
Thursday 5th July 2018, Newcastle, 9.30 - 12.30
How can voluntary sector criminal justice services contribute to better outcomes for individuals at risk of a short custodial sentence?
Over the past ten years we have seen the number of people sentenced to custody steadily rise, whilst the number of community sentences has declined significantly. Our prison system is struggling under an increasing population and ageing infrastructure.
This forum will explore how co-ordinated support from voluntary sector services in the community could contribute to early intervention and alternatives to custody – getting people the right support as early as possible to reduce the risk of re-offending.

MEAM Approach Opportunity
Expressions of Interests Sought
The MEAM Approach is a non-prescriptive framework to help local areas design and deliver better coordinated services. In November 2017, following a national Expression of Interest process, the MEAM coalition selected 23 local areas to join an expanded MEAM Approach network.
Due to new capacity with the team, MEAM are now in a position to invite seven further areas to join the network in the autumn of 2018. It is also expected, in line with our original plans, to run a further Expression of Interest process in 2020.
For this round, we are looking for new MEAM Approach areas in the following regions: Greater Manchester, North East, Midlands, and the South.
If your area is moving towards coordinated interventions for people with multiple disadvantage, has an initial cross-sector partnership in place and is able to secure money to self-fund an intervention, possibly through pooled funding, and you are within the regions mentioned above, then you are encouraged to apply for support from the MEAM coalition.
