The other topic challenging our thinking is the bigger picture in terms of NHS reforms and the future role of social prescribing. We know that social prescribing works, and we know it will play a vital role in any future Neighbourhood Health Service, and that supporting individuals to address social and economic challenges is key to prevention. And yet social prescribing barely gets a mention in the new 10-year plan, while we hear about GP surgeries diverting away from social prescribing in favour of more clinical roles. If I had a bit more hair, I’d be pulling it out.
Thankfully, there are also some great examples of social prescribing innovations, including specialist roles spreading into secondary care, and the development of new integrated neighbourhood models does present an opportunity to deliver more joined-up, holistic services. These are some of the opportunities and challenges that we will be discussing at our next network summit on 8th October.
As social prescribing network members you have amazing expertise, extensive experience and ideas, and rather than banging our collective heads onto our desks in despair, I hope many of you will be able to join us at the event to think creatively together about what it is possible to achieve and how we can influence change in the right places.
