Sunderland Counselling Service has an exciting opportunity for a qualified counsellor to join our organisation to deliver counselling in the North Tyneside IAPT service known as North Tyneside Talking Therapies, on a permanent 0.7 FTE basis. The post holder will be expected to work 3.5 days a week (26.25 hours) on the following days:

Tuesday: 09:00 – 12:45

Wednesday: 11:30 – 19:30

Thursday: 09:00 – 17:00

Friday: 09:00 – 17:00

The successful candidate will be paid at Agenda for Change Band 6 comparable salary (£32,306 FTE pro-rata) if Accredited with the BACP or an equivalent professional body. If you are a member of the BACP or member of an equivalent professional body and are not yet Accredited, you will be paid at a salary of £26,887 FTE pro-rata.

We are looking for a competent qualified counsellor with significant post qualification counselling experience who will be able to work independently, and is aware of how to make use of the outcome measures required when working within an IAPT service. Experience of working within an IAPT service is ideal, or of working within a time-limited framework.

You will be joining an established team in North Tyneside to deliver up to six sessions of counselling at Step 2, either face to face, via video, or telephone, to adults from different cultural backgrounds and ages (using interpreters when necessary) who are experiencing mild to moderate mental health conditions that impact on their daily lives.

You will also complete assessments for new referrals into the service, and facilitate counselling support groups. The provision of counselling is one of a range of therapeutic interventions within a stepped care model which helps to ensure increased patient choice and access to services.

You will be supported through regular counselling supervision and line and case management provided by SCS.

Dependent on the evolving situation regarding COVID-19 and possible restrictions within healthcare settings, you may be expected to take a blended approach to delivering services from the bases in Wallsend and North Shields, a range of health and community venues throughout the borough of North Tyneside, and also confidentially from home.

Sunderland Counselling Service is an established independent mental health charity which is acknowledged for its contribution to the community by mental health professionals, health practitioners, and local and regional voluntary and statutory community agencies. We have grown into one of the leading IAPT providers for mental health across the North East of England. We work in partnership with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to deliver counselling in North Tyneside Talking Therapies.

The post holder will be employed by SCS and entitled to our employee benefits such as 30 days annual leave FTE pro-rata, access to our free 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme, Bike2Work Scheme, self-care group, access to training provided by the service as well as SCS, and be part of a supportive team which emphasises the importance of continuing personal and professional development. This will include a focus on training in IAPT compliant modalities, specifically Person-Centred Experiential Counselling for Depression.

If you would like further information about the post, please contact Linda Collins, Operations Manager at Linda.Collins@northumbria-healthcare.nhs.uk.
