East Durham Trust

East Durham Trust (on behalf of a Consortium including themselves, Durham County Council, Beamish Museums, Believe Housing and East Durham Area Action Partnership) is seeking to recruit a Creative Community Activist to support the Creative People and Places (CPP) project ‘East Durham Creates’ as it expands into the wider county.

Since 2014, the Trust has been a key partner in the East Durham Creates project, which was initially led by Beamish Museum. In 2018 the Trust became the lead accountable body, embedding a commitment to arts and culture in its traditionally poverty focussed provision.

To date, East Durham Creates has engaged over a 130,000 people in arts and culture through a range of activity including:

  • A series of ambitious major commissions developed and co-produced with local communities working with renowned artists and organisations.
  • A programme of Covid-19 proof arts delivery during the pandemic including dynamic commissions, arts packs and digital work.
  • The development of a network of Cultural Hubs, non-traditional venues including community centres and village halls who programme arts and culture on a regular basis at a hyperlocal level.
  • A wide range of locally based commissions working with or led by our local community.
  • Facilitating visits to established cultural venues beyond the boundaries of East Durham through our Go & See programme.
  • Exciting partnership projects like Street Museums, a project with Durham University to explore innovative ways that local people can engage with their collections.

In late 2021, East Durham Creates was successful in joining 38 other CPP programmes as part of Arts Council England's Creative People and Places National Portfolio Programme. This exciting new phase will include expansion into the wider county as well as continuing to nurture the cultural ambition of communities in East Durham.

We are now looking for an enthusiastic, committed and compassionate individual to help support the project connecting with new communities in the wider county.

Further details of the project and its work to date can be found in the recruitment pack.
