Dementia Friendly Activity Tutor (Casual)

£17.35 per hour

(Hourly rate includes planning, preparation and administration)

We require a Dementia Friendly Activities Tutor to provide creative, interesting and stimulating activities to our clients some of whom are living with dementia. Example activities could include: singing, music, crafts, games, quizzes and reminiscence sessions.

This is a great opportunity for you to engage with older people within our community and have a positive impact on their lives.

Experience of delivering Dementia Friendly Activities is essential. You are required to have appropriate teaching qualifications (you can be working towards one), such as the Level 3 Award in Education & Training (QCF).

You will be expected to work in various Age UK Sunderland centres and community venues in and around the Sunderland area.

Job Description

Role: Dementia Friendly Activities Tutor (Casual)

Location: Various Age UK Sunderland Centres and community venues

Responsible to: Essence Manager

Job Purpose:

 To teach a varied programme of dementia friendly activities to older people living with dementia, which enables clients to improve self-esteem and self-confidence and to develop their creativity.

Job Description:

  •  Design a structured programme of dementia friendly activities that will match the needs of participants.
  •  Use appropriate teaching methods to promote engagement in the programme, assess each learner’s prior knowledge and establish their ability at the start of the course, monitor their progress session by session and, together with individual learners, evaluate progress at appropriate intervals.
  •  Develop participants’ confidence and self-esteem. Ensure that each participant’s contribution is recognised and valued and create a climate conducive to the needs of adults.
  •  Provide participant’s with information and advice to ensure they are aware of potential progression routes to enhance their health, wellbeing and independence.
  •  Complete all relevant administrative and recording tasks related to delivery of the programme, to a high standard.
  •  Achieve specified targets and meet deadlines.
  •  Continue to develop professional skills, knowledge and expertise, attending training and development events as and when required.
  •  To abide by and implement all policies and procedures of Age UK Sunderland, including: Safeguarding, Equal Opportunities and Health and Safety and GDPR.

Person Specification

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  •  Subject based Dementia Friendly Activities qualifications to at least NVQ (or equivalent) Level 3.
  •  Teaching qualification (can be working towards one), such as the Level 3 Award in Education & Training.
  •  Experience of teaching Dementia Friendly Activities to adult learners.
  •  To be highly personable with excellent communication skills.
  •  To be highly self-motivated and able to motive others.
  •  To work with a positive, flexible and professional manner.
  •  To be honest, trustworthy and reliable.
  •  Ability to use information technology to enhance teaching, learning and assessment.
  •  To be organised with ability to produce high quality course documentation and resources.
  •  Able to work with a variety of colleagues and clients from different professions and backgrounds
