Wearside Women in Need

WWiN is a dynamic Sunderland-based organisation with expert, dedicated staff and a highly engaged and strategic Board. We are looking to recruit new trustees to join the Board as we embark on an exciting period of development, opening new services and implementing community-wide approaches to tackling domestic abuse.

Established in 1983, WWiN provides accessible community-based services to women and children at risk of, or suffering, abuse.  As a full member of the Women’s Aid Federation England (WAFE) we are part of a national network of providers working together to ensure safe spaces for families in need.  This means we accept referrals from across Wearside, but also women and children who need to escape to safety away from their local area.

The need for our specialist services is enormous; in 2019-20 we received 3,184 referrals for services. In that year we accommodated 187 women with 136 children in our refuges and our outreach and IDVA teams supported 1,075 women (and their children) to be safe.

We are looking to recruit trustees who bring expertise in the following areas:

  • Housing management and development
  • Drug and alcohol services
  • Mental health services
  • Child and adult safeguarding
  • Media and communications

We particularly welcome candidates from black and minority ethnic backgrounds, and candidates with a disability, as they are currently under-represented at this level of our organisation. Living or working on Wearside is preferable, but not essential.

Board meetings take place in central Sunderland, every six-eight weeks, from 4-6pm. There is an annual Board away day and the opportunity to join staff development days. A full induction programme, with training on domestic abuse and team visits, is in place. Mentoring is also available if this would be your first trusteeship.

If you would like to apply, please send us your CV with a covering letter explaining why you want to join the WWiN Board to For an informal chat about what the role involves, please email our Co-Chair at to arrange a convenient time.
