Talbot House Trust, a Residential Children’s Home and SEMH School, are seeking volunteers to join our current team of Trustees and Governors.

We would be very interested to speak to you if you share our passion about our services and a genuine interest in the welfare, care and development of children and young people with social, emotional or mental health considerations.

We are specifically interested to find local Trustees/Governors who have experience in the following areas:

  • Education
  • Charity Sector
  • Finance
  • HR
  • Children’s Social Care
  • Children’s or Adolescents Therapy
  • Local residents and parents
  • Local business owners / employees

You do not need to be a parent of a child who attends Talbot House Trust to join our team and you don not need to have had previous experience in these roles. 

The Trust requires Trustees and Governors who will:

  • Take a strategic role on the board holding the Senior Management Team (SMT) to the ethos and principles of the charity in line with its founding documents;
  • Provide support and balanced guidance to the SMT, acting as a critical friend;
  • Ensure accountability of the SMT regarding finance management;
  • Provide challenge in a measured and open way.

Trustees will do the above in matters concerning both the school and the home.  Governors who will be concerned with the school only in the above matters.  Volunteers can opt to be both a Trustee and a Governor, or just one or the other. 

Talbot House Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of its pupils and the successful applicant will be subject to an enhanced DBS Disclosure. The Trust will pay for and arrange all DBS checks. Please see our Safer Recruitment Policy on our website.

The roles of Trustee/Governors are voluntary; however, the Trust does require a level of commitment for the role.

Our Trustees and Governors meet up to 4 afternoons/evenings per year for full board meetings. In the post Covid-19 era, we have a newfound appreciation for the remote meeting attendee; this allows us to look for volunteers from further afield. If you wish to join us in a fully virtual capacity please let us know.  Our Governors are also allocated to committees, who meet 3 times a year in addition to full board meetings. There are also termly monitoring requirements for our Governors. 

Full induction and ongoing training will be provided; a mentor from the existing board will be assigned so that you are supported fully. 

Many companies encourage employees to volunteer in this way as part of their corporate social responsibility allowing attendance at our meetings without affecting other terms and conditions (if you are currently employed, please check with your own HR department who will provide details).

We are a registered charity and have two main areas of service within the Trust; our non-maintained special school, offering education to up to 60, 5 -18 year olds, and our residential children’s home offering a home for up to five, 7 to 18 year olds. We operate services for children with social, emotional and mental health considerations. Both facilities are set in seven acres of well-kept gardens and grounds, and both sit within a secluded and tranquil location on the outskirts of Newcastle (West) bordering Northumberland.  The trust has been in operation since 1974, set up by local business people and social workers who wanted to affect change for children who were not included in school life.  Please visit the history section on our website to learn more about the fascinating story behind the name of our trust, and the journey travelled since the days of the Alnmouth camps.

In our school, the children referred to us may have a diagnosis (ASD or ADHD for example) or may have experienced a disrupted childhood, which makes it more difficult for them to progress happily within a mainstream setting. Our nurturing and positive environment with a much greater adult to child ratio can provide the most secure relationship in a child’s life.  Children who may have become disheartened with traditional school life are offered a broad curriculum, which celebrates success and achievement on the social and emotional spectrum as well as academically. The Trust provides a variety of skills, training and qualifications, preparing students for life in the wider community and in further education and employment.

Our residential children’s home aims are to provide security and stability for young people who are “looked after” in the care system. Many people have the view that children live with us as a last resort, that other options have been exhausted or that the child is displaying such worrying behaviour that they cannot live anywhere else.  In reality, there are many reasons why a child may not be able to live with birth family, and living in a home, as opposed to a foster family, relieves the pressure of expectation.  There is comfort in knowing that they have one family and we often help to encourage safe birth family relationships where appropriate, while taking the primary care responsibility away. Offering high quality residential care based upon the foundations of exemplary primary care, we provide as near family environment as is feasible and provide facilities to enable young people to achieve positive change in their lives.
