LA7 Community Grants: Round 5 (Grant - North East)
Grants of up to £15,000 are available to support inactive / unemployed people to help their progression towards further learning and employment. The deadline for applications is 10th September. Gateshead Council LearningSkills, on behalf of the 7 Local Authorities (LA7) from the North East LEP area, is seeking bids from Third Sector Organisations for the provision of community projects. They are offering grants to support a range of activities aimed at assisting inactive/ unemployed people to move closer to the labour market.

Employer match model to unlock ESF investment
The North East Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and VONNE are delighted to announce that an ESF applicant no longer has to have all employer match funding in place before the project commences. ESF Open call launched to support projects to raise skills - Health & Social Care workforce
An ESF Open Call has been launched to ensure that care operators in the North East, can provide a high standard of training and retain staff. Proposals must demonstrate an increase in skills levels of employees to promote in-work progression and should incorporate specialist training for employees in mental health, learning disabilities and older people services. The European Social Fund (ESF) has opened new calls for projects worth £35m across the North East LEP area; these are: • £3m ESF to support young people aged 18-29 overcome barriers to employment (Northumberland and Tyne and Wear only). • £6m ESF to provide specialist support to help overcome barriers to employment • £6m ESF to support North East Ambition • £20m ESF to support Digital Skills development

European Structural and Investment Funds: useful resources
The European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) Growth programme is funding for projects that create jobs and supports local growth. The funds includes the European Social Fund (ESF), European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and part of the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. The European Structural and Investment Funds resources website includes details of beneficiaries, publicity materials, regulations and a glossary for organisations running European Regional Development Fund and European Social Fund projects.

Further certainty on EU funding - Chancellors' conference speech
Following his announcement in August, which guaranteed funds for projects signed up until the Autumn Statement, the Chancellor has now extended this guarantee to the point at which the UK departs the EU. The Chancellor confirmed that the government will guarantee EU funding for structural and investment fund projects, including agri-environment schemes, signed after the Autumn Statement and which continue after we have left the EU.

Wise Group takes steps to support employment across Tyne & Wear communities
Social enterprise the Wise Group is to launch a major new project to support employment in communities across Tyne & Wear. The Wise Steps project has been awarded £7.2 million by the Big Lottery Fund and the European Social Fund to support people facing barriers to work in Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead and North and South Tyneside.

Chancellor Philip Hammond guarantees EU funding beyond date UK leaves the EU

North East LEP seeking Government assurances on EU structural funding
The North East Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is seeking reassurance that European (EU) funded projects already signed off by Government will continue to be delivered. To date, the North East LEP area has £89.5million of its £437million EU structural funding committed to projects for the 2014-2020 period. A further £104.5million worth of projects were put forward to Government for approval in advance of the Referendum.

Building Better Opportunities fund launched
Big Lottery Fund is matching funds from the European Social Fund (ESF) 2014-2020 through the Building Better Opportunities programme, launched on 5th June 2015. Its aim is to provide joint investment in local projects tackling the root causes of poverty, promoting social inclusion and driving local jobs and growth.

Presentations from EU workshops
VONNE held a series of workshops exploring the opportunities that will be available under EU Structural Investment Funds (ESIF) 2014-2020. Delegates received presentations from James Davies of the North East Local Enterprise Partnership setting out the ESIF 2014-20 strategy in the North East. Big Lottery presented their match funding proposals. Jo Curry gave a presentation on the funding that will be available for social inclusion and poverty reduction. Helen Joicey from Newskills consulting gave a presentation on Compliance issues.

Social Inclusion in the NELEP area
VONNE is working with Big Lottery fund and the North East LEP to develop plans for Social Inclusion and Poverty Reduction. As part of that work VONNE has developed a first draft of a paper setting out the background of Social Inclusion issues in the NELEP area.
