Funders Spotlight - Crowdfund North of Tyne: Zero Carbon, Zero Poverty

The North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA) has launched the third round of Crowdfund North of Tyne – Zero Carbon, Zero Poverty – to provide a springboard for locally-led greening and food security in the North of Tyne (Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland).

The deadline is September 22nd.

This is a £200,000 fund, from the NTCA Mayor’s Capacity Fund. As part of the Combined Authority’s dedication to a net zero transition and Mayor Driscoll’s manifesto commitment to work with communities to tackle the climate emergency and food poverty, NTCA wants to fund projects that will make a positive impact for local people and the local area. This can be anything from a community garden, to supporting the reduction of food waste.

Projects should be local, community-led initiatives that improve or create green spaces for the benefit of local communities, or reduce food waste and make it easier for everyone to access fresh, local food.

Projects may also:

  • bring people together in new ways
  • create new green spaces or improve places that matter
  • support people’s wellbeing and mental health - especially outdoors
  • inspire creativity and opportunity for all – including promoting lifelong learning
  • support social enterprise and co-operative development for the good of the local community.

Registered charities, constituted community groups and community interest companies (CICs) can potentially receive a pledge of up to £10-15k or 70-80 per cent total project costs. Individuals and non-constituted community groups can potentially receive a pledge of up to £1k.

Crowdfunding campaigns will be run between October and December 2021. NTCA will review all project campaigns and successful projects can expect to receive a pledge from the council in early November. Projects that hit their target early can continue to raise money until their original deadline. Pledges will be collected and transferred to the project normally within 10 working days of the campaign ending.

Please note: NTCA will not be the first organisation to pledge to a project and will want to see community support and backing, in the form of smaller pledges from local people, before they pledge to the campaign.
