Location: Tyne and Wear

Role description: Board Member

US works with young people aged 12-25 living in Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and North Durham who have, or who are at risk of developing mental health difficulties.  We also support neurodiverse young people. We work to engage them in a sport or fitness activity of their choice in order for them to benefit from the mental health benefits of physical activity and exercise: feeling good, increased confidence,  self-esteem and self-image, as well as increased engagement in other aspects of life, including school or work. We want to support young people to identify and achieve personal goals,  empowering them to overcome obstacles early and prevent problems in the future.

Established in 2016, our provision is growing year on year. Since 2016 we have worked with 600 plus young people following referrals from a network of referral agencies from the health, care, education, training, justice, community and voluntary sectors, as well as parents and young people themselves.

Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that US Active achieves its core purpose. They ensure that US Active has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the Chief Operating Officer and Chair to enable US Active to grow and thrive, and through this, empower young people with or at risk of developing mental health issues to transform their lives through participation in a diverse range of physical exercise activities.

We are keen to recruit new trustees with particular expertise in one or more of the following areas which would add to our current strengths on the Board:

  • Legal matters
  • Planning and Strategy
  • Marketing and promotion
  • Parents of or person with lived experience
  • Bid writing and fundraising

We would also welcome applications from individuals offering other skills to compliment those already provided by our present trustees. You do not need previous governance experience – we will provide a full induction and training.
