At Space4 we tell stories of hope!

Sometimes the stories that we hear from our communities can leave us feeling pretty hopeless: the cost-of-living crisis, the need for more foodbanks, the inability to heat our homes, the insurmountable challenges that people are facing and the need for ‘sticking plaster’ solutions to fix problems.  At Space4 we want to tell a different story that is much more hopeful!

For the last twelve years, we have run a community project in Houghton-le-Spring that is a real story of success.  We seek to be alongside people from all backgrounds working with people to help them to address some of the issues they are facing in their day-to-day lives.  We believe that everyone in our community is important and has something to offer, and that shapes the whole ethos of our project.

A great example of the kind of story we’re able to tell relates to creatively working with people dealing with poverty.  After the pandemic we were running one of the biggest foodbanks in the local area.  We changed our foodbank into a community foodstore – we still support people who are struggling but in a dignified way and where they can choose what food they want.  People contribute however they can to enable us to help others, that can include by providing recipes for our Space4 Cookbook!  We’re also involved in ‘Community Organising’ with like-minded organisations to build up our community while trying to address some of the root causes of poverty for local people.

As we move forward to the next chapter of our story, we are looking to appoint a new Community Hub Coordinator to be responsible for our operations within the Space4 Hub and to coordinate delivery of events and activities that help to respond to the isolation and anxiety that many in our communities are facing at present..

If you like the sound of our story, we’d love you to tell us how your story could complement our own.  You will have experience of leadership in community activities and of managing people including managing volunteers.  You will have good organisation skills, good verbal and written communication as well as experience of working with MS Office products.  You will have a compassionate approach with people and will have an ability to be diplomatic when dealing with sensitive issues.  You will have drive and energy and will be a good listener with a willingness to learn and grow yourself: as part of our project, we will offer you Community Organising training with our partner ‘Tyne and Wear Citizens.

If you want to be a part of our future story and to help us write the next chapter in a hopeful way, we’d love to hear from you.

Our overall project aim is to be ‘a space for community to flourish’.  Our ethos leads us to try to make sure people feel valued and cherished as part of a community, believing everyone has something to contribute.  We try to empower people to take control of their own lives and encourage people to be the best version of themselves they can be.

Space4 is the community project of St Michael and All Angels’ Church Houghton-le-Spring.  Space4 and St Michael and All Angels, Houghton-le-Spring are committed to equality and diversity and welcome applicants from all sections of the community.  The successful candidate should have a positive attitude to Christian ethos and values.

Space4 and the PCC of St Michael and All Angels' are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. All post holders and volunteers are expected to share this commitment.

Appointment is subject to acceptable pre-appointment checks, including a satisfactory Enhanced DBS Check.  The post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
