As part of our package of member benefits, VONNE’s Gold and Silver Membership+ supporters have the opportunity to submit a guest post for our website. This blog from Denise Farrar, CEO of Shine On, tells us about their charity's recent rebrand and some of their key developments over the last 8 months.

Formerly known as Caring Hands, Shine On is stepping into a new chapter with fresh energy, a vibrant identity, and a new central base in Heaton. Under the leadership of recently appointed CEO Denise Farrar, the charity has undergone a revitalisation aimed at better meeting the needs of older people across East Newcastle.
“The name Caring Hands had become a bit dated, and the charity was somewhat in decline, particularly post-pandemic,” says Denise. “We wanted a name that reflected our mission to support people to live independent, connected lives and to combat poverty and isolation. Shine On captures our spirit – we want people to shine on as they age!”

Over the past eight months, Shine On has focused on strengthening its foundations—reviewing its vision, mission, and values, and listening closely to what older people and local agencies say they need.
Key developments include:
- The relaunch of the much-loved community launderette in Shieldfield this June, following a complete refurbishment. It will offer longer opening hours, a small retail section for laundry products, and remain a vital resource for people without access to washing facilities.
- The launch of the Silver Lining Social, a monthly social club bringing people together, additional walking and gardening groups, face-to-face counselling, and more.
- Expansion of essential services, including benefits advice, home handyman support, befriending, and provision of small aids.
- Plans for a hygiene poverty project, tackling a hidden but pressing issue for many older people.

Shine On is also preparing to launch an ambitious fundraising campaign, develop its Theory of Change, and is working towards achieving the Trusted Standard for charities, further underscoring its commitment to quality, transparency, and impact.
“We’re a small team,” Denise adds, “but we like to think of ourselves as small but mighty. We’re determined to grow our reach and support more people in more ways.”
