We are looking for a Deputy Head Verger to play an integral role in upholding the dignity of the Cathedral as a place of worship and are responsible for the overall care of the building. Vergers play a key role in supporting our commercial events, which are increasingly vital to the Cathedral’s financial sustainability and the continued operation of both the Vergers’ work and the Cathedral as a whole.
The Deputy Head Verger will play an active role in the Verging Team, supporting the day-to-day operation of the Cathedral and ensuring the highest standards are met for services, events, presentation, welcome, maintenance and safety. This is a complex, demanding, and rewarding role that requires flexibility, initiative, and strong interpersonal skills. The post-holder will be expected to embrace the dynamic nature of the role, adapting as the Cathedral continues to grow and develop. They will lead by example, working as part of a committed and hard-working team.
Your background may be in hospitality, events, building management, or in a similar role to this one. You may already be serving as a leader or paid Verger in your local church or cathedral. We are looking for someone with a mature outlook, excellent interpersonal skills, and a deep empathy for our Christian mission and values. Tell us about your transferable skills and any experience you may have gained in other sectors.
The post holder must be in sympathy with the Church of England’s aims and ethos and must also fully support the values of Newcastle Cathedral.
