About the job
The Know Your Neighbourhood Project (KYN) is to promote community support and accessibility for people who have a learning disability.
We are looking for 1 person with learning disabilities to become a Peer Support Worker for the Know Your Neighbourhood project in South Tyneside.
Hours of work
1 day (7.5 hours) per week.
The job will last until 31st March 2026.
What you will do
You and your team will help local people who have a learning disability, and autistic people.
You and your team will be helping people who have asked for some help.
These are some of the ways you might help each person:
- Asking them about what help they need
- Helping them to think about their hopes and dreams
- Helping them to think what they are good at
- Helping them to find out what can help them to have a good life
- Helping them to make a plan
- Helping them to try new activities and visit new places in South Tyneside
- Helping people to set up peer support groups or activities
- Delivering training and workshops with the community Connectors to help people learn new skills and information
- Helping people to have their voice heard about things that are important to them
What kind of person we are looking for
- You must have personal experience of having a learning disability or being autistic.
- You must be interested in helping people to have a better life
- You must be good at listening
- You must be able to talk to lots of different people.
- You must be able to think of good ideas about how people can live a happy and healthy life, making the most of where they live
- You will understand how to work with people and see the things they are good at.
- You must believe in equal opportunities for everyone.
- You can travel around South Tyneside and get to the places we run drop ins.
- You can have support if you need it.
- You will be good at working with others
- You live in South Tyneside or know South Tyneside well.
It would be good if:
- You know how to use a phone, computer or both.
- You can have support if you need it
- You can travel around Gateshead and know the area.
- You can have support if you need it
- You know how to use social media, WhatsApp, Zoom or Microsoft Teams
- We can give you support with IT
