About the job

The Know Your Neighbourhood Project (KYN) is to promote community support and accessibility for people who have a learning disability.

We are looking for 1 person with learning disabilities to become a Peer Support Worker for the Know Your Neighbourhood project in South Tyneside.

Hours of work

1 day (7.5 hours) per week.

The job will last until 31st March 2026.

What you will do

You and your team will help local people who have a learning disability, and autistic people.

You and your team will be helping people who have asked for some help.

These are some of the ways you might help each person:

• Asking them about what help they need
• Helping them to think about their hopes and dreams
• Helping them to think what they are good at
• Helping them to find out what can help them to have a good life
• Helping them to make a plan
• Helping them to try new activities and visit new places in South Tyneside
• Helping people to set up peer support groups or activities
• Delivering training and workshops with the community Connectors to help people learn new skills and information
• Helping people to have their voice heard about things that are important to them

What kind of person we are looking for

• You must have personal experience of having a learning disability or being autistic.
• You must be interested in helping people to have a better life
• You must be good at listening
• You must be able to talk to lots of different people.
• You must be able to think of good ideas about how people can live a happy and healthy life, making the most of where they live
• You will understand how to work with people and see the things they are good at.
• You must believe in equal opportunities for everyone.
• You can travel around South Tyneside and get to the places we run drop ins.
• You can have support if you need it.
• You will be good at working with others
• You live in South Tyneside or know South Tyneside well.

It would be good if:

• You know how to use a phone, computer or both.
• You can have support if you need it
• You can travel around Gateshead and know the area.
• You can have support if you need it
• You know how to use social media, WhatsApp, Zoom or Microsoft Teams
• We can give you support with IT
