Northumbria Historic Churches Trust (NHCT) is seeking to appoint a Trustee with a strong accounting background to join its Board.

Following a recent and generous legacy, the Trust is entering a period of growth, with increased capacity to award grants for the repair and restoration of churches across the North East. We are therefore looking to strengthen our Board with additional financial expertise to support robust financial management and governance during this next phase.

About the Role

As a Trustee, you will contribute to the strategic direction and governance of the Trust, helping to ensure that financial processes, controls and reporting are appropriate, transparent and effective.

You will work alongside fellow Trustees to:

  • oversee the financial health, integrity and sustainability of the Trust
  • support strong financial controls, compliance and risk management
  • review financial reporting, budgets and annual accounts
  • contribute to sound decision-making on grant allocation
  • work closely with the Treasurer to support financial oversight and governance

Skills and Experience

We are particularly seeking someone with experience in:

  • accounting, audit, or financial reporting
  • financial controls, risk management and compliance
  • governance within a charity or similar organisation (desirable but not essential)

Experience of working with auditors, independent examiners, or in a regulated environment would be particularly valuable.

You will also demonstrate:

  • the confidence to provide constructive challenge and scrutiny
  • the ability to interpret financial information clearly for a non-financial audience
  • strong communication skills and the ability to contribute effectively in a group setting
