North East Core Funding
North East Core Funding provides grants of up to £60,000 (£20,000 a year, up to three years) to charitable organisations based in the North East of England who are making a real difference in their communities. These grants are to help those organisations cover their core running costs, allowing them to increase their capacity to provide quality services.
The programme supports organisations in Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, Durham and Teesside that work in the more disadvantaged neighbourhoods, or support otherwise disadvantaged people, particularly in the following priority areas:
- people with disabilities
- homeless people
- voluntary carers
- older and isolated people
Greggs Foundation understands that core running costs are a difficult budget area to secure, which is why they offer this funding. The following costs will be considered:
- Contributions towards bills, i.e. electricity, gas, rent, rates
- Contributions towards core salaries (managers or administrators rather than project workers or sessional staff)
- HMRC costs relating to the core salaries only
Any not-for-profit organisation, based in and delivering activities within North East England is eligible to apply. Priority will be given to smaller organisations with fewer employees.
Basic criteria
To be eligible to apply for a grant from us, you need to meet all of our criteria below. Ineligible applications will not be considered.
- A not for profit organisation.
- You must be based in and delivering all, or the vast majority, of your services in the North East of England. We are unable to consider national organisations, branches of national organisations, or federations of national organisations.
- An annual income of between £20,000 and £300,00 in your last set of accounts.
- At least one set of annual accounts, having been delivering services for over a year.
- Free reserves of less than six months' running costs in your last set of accounts which includes reserves you have decided to allocate but are free to reallocate and does not include fixed assets such as land and buildings.
- A board of at least three unrelated trustees or directors.
- A safeguarding policy in place.

Grant Deadlines
There will be two rounds of North East Core Funding in 2023.
Round 1 in 2023 is now open for applications and closes on the 10th of February 2023. The decision date has been moved back from the 28th of April to the 12th of May 2023.
Round 2 in 2023 opens for applications on the 12th of June 2023 and closes on the 18th of August 2023. Decisions will be made by the 20th of October 2023.
