The Baily Thomas Charitable Fund is a grant making registered charity which was established primarily to aid the research into learning disability and to aid the care and relief of those affected by learning disability by making grants to voluntary organisations working in this field.

The Fund operates two general grant funding streams, a General Grant Programme for appeals over £10,000 and a Small Grant Programme for appeals up to £5,000. Application for funding is normally considered for capital and revenue costs and for both specific projects and for general running/core costs. Grants are awarded for amounts from £250 and depend on a number of factors including the purpose, the total funding requirement and the potential sources of other funds including, in some cases, match funding.

Small Grants

The Fund operates a programme for small grants which awards grants up to a maximum of £5,000. These appeals are considered solely by the Chair of Trustees and outside of the usual meetings in March, June and November.

General Grant Programme

For funding applications for £9,000 and above applications will be considered at main grant board meetings

The rolling application deadlines are:-

  • 1 December for consideration at the meeting to be held in March.
  • 1 March for consideration at the meeting to be held in June.
  • 1 August for consideration at the meeting to be held in November.

Please note, late submissions are not permitted and your application will be processed in accordance with the above timetable. You are encouraged to submit your application as soon as you are able, rather than waiting for the deadline.

Who can apply for funding?

The Baily Thomas Charitable Fund provides grants for general and research work with people with learning disabilities. “Learning disabilities” is the same as “intellectual disabilities”; these terms are inter-changeable.

  • People with learning disabilities have these three things:
  • global intellectual impairment (intelligence quotient less than 70), and
  • need for support/help to fulfil ordinary daily activities, and
  • onset before the age of 18 years.

Applications will only be considered from voluntary groups that are registered charities or are associated with a registered charity. Schools and Parent Teacher Associations, Industrial & Provident Societies and other such exempt charities can also apply. CICs will not be considered.

Upcoming deadline:

The next deadline for applications for £9,000 and above will be 1st December 2023 for consideration at the meeting to be held in March 2024.
