Local homelessness charity, Emmaus North East, is celebrating after winning an award for their social enterprises at the North East Charity Awards 2024.

The charity is thrilled to win the ‘Outstanding Social Enterprise’ award which recognises the important work they are doing to end homelessness and alleviate poverty in the North East. In 2023 Emmaus North East opened their social enterprise, Lucie’s Laundry, a free to use community launderette, after they heard reports that local children were going to school in dirty clothes due to a lack of washing facilities.

Since its inception, Lucie’s Laundry has provided support to over 6,000 individuals across the North East, offering aid to people from diverse backgrounds and a wide range of circumstances.

Neil, a regular user of the launderette, said: “I don’t have the facilities to be able to wash and dry my clothes at home, so this service is vital for me. Life would be hard without it. ”

Speaking about the launderette and the award, the charity's Chief Executive Officer, Ruth Parker said: “I'm thrilled that our work has been recognised with a North East Charity Award for Outstanding Social Enterprise and a shortlisting for Trustee Board of the Year. Emmaus North East is dedicated to supporting homeless people by providing permanent homes and holistic care to transform their lives. We also focus on preventing homelessness and helping families facing poverty, which led to the creation of our free laundry service—the only one of its kind in England. It’s more than just a service; it's a welcoming space for conversation, tackling loneliness and social isolation. Huge thanks to the Emmaus team, the North East Charity Awards, and the judging panel for acknowledging our work and its impact on local communities.”
