IPPR North’s latest State of the North report argues that politicians have failed to deliver on their promises to invest in the North.
Using cutbacks to the long-promised High Speed 2 rail project as an example, the think tank suggests that the government’s policies have been inadequate compared to its ambitious rhetoric on levelling up. The report claims that the North-South divide has widened in the last 12 months, pointing out that for every new job created in the North, three were created in London and the South East.
IPPR North calls for a new approach to levelling up that is designed to empower people and communities. The report concludes by proposing three missions to help promote a thriving, prosperous North – building a new economy, making the North the engine of the net-zero transition, and providing everyone with high-quality, lifelong education.
