A new report, commissioned by electricity distributor Northern Powergrid, has helped identify some of the real benefits Community Energy projects can bring to people and communities beyond financial savings and local investment.
The research, independently authored by Explain, took an in-depth look at eight projects supported by Northern Powergrid’s Community Energy Seed Fund to explore the environmental and social benefits.
Supporting the report, Northern Powergrid has also published two Community Energy case studies to share project learnings. A further six case studies will be published in the coming weeks.
Anne-Claire Leydier, Northern Powergrid’s Sustainability Manager, said: “Community energy projects often have an element related to money, such as saving money on bills or creating a steady income, but they also have a tangible, positive social impact for the people who get involved and those at the receiving end of a project.
“The report clearly shows that Community Energy is about more than just energy – it’s an outreach activity that develops, strengthens, and educates a local community.
“We hope the research, and case studies we’re publishing, will inspire and provide a fantastic source of information for like-minded individuals who are considering getting involved in Community Energy.”
Daniela Grant, Northern Powergrid’s Social Responsibility Advisor, added: “Viewing community energy as a form of community development rather than solely energy work, puts a different emphasis on the way that projects can be thought of because they can strengthen communities in so many different ways.
“Seeing real examples and sharing experiences can only be beneficial in helping more projects succeed and deliver further social benefits for local people and communities in our region.”
The report also highlights the difference that seed funding can make in kick-starting and nurturing Community Energy projects. Since 2014, Northern Powergrid has provided £100,000 of grants to community energy groups across Yorkshire and the North East, most recently awarding seed funding to seven groups. The electricity distributor is committed to supporting these groups to help them take control of their energy, and recognises that facilitating this type of innovation benefits communities environmentally, socially and financially.
Whilst the research focused on a qualitative research of a small number of projects, its findings reaffirm earlier research published by Quantum for Community Energy England and by Nesta about the wider benefits of Community Energy.
