Community Sustainability Services (CSS)
CSS is a registered charity which has been established for over 20 years. We are based in Sunderland with one branch in Southwick and one in Thorney Close. We support a wide range of vulnerable people within our region and this equates to approximately 5,200 people each year.
We provide low cost furniture, re-use, upcycling and recycling facilities, plus a Handyperson Service.
Our re-use operation provides those who are on a low income with much needed furniture for their homes. An example is where someone may have recently been allocated a property via a social landlord and they are in need of items such as reused sofas, wardrobes and beds as well as most other pieces of furniture that may be required. We offer various items of new furniture for sale as well as donated items. We also provide services for disabled people, in particular those with mental health issues through placements at our Furniture Reuse Workshop and we offer occasional employment opportunities here
Alongside this we provide disadvantaged people with various work experience placements and volunteering opportunities throughout our organisation.
Through operating all of our services we divert approximately 80 tonnes of bulky waste from landfill each year.

Community@NE66 is a Community and Youth Development Charity project which grew from a desire to provide a firmer footing to the youth work in our area of Alnwick (which ranks in the 23rd-26th percentile of deprivation), and to improve the aspirations of the community, many of whom have multiple complex needs. The Charitable Trust was set up in 2017 and six Trustees with varied experience within education, local government, and community work oversee the Trust. The activities are headed up by a Project Manager (who is also the Senior Youth Worker), supported by three part-time Youth Workers, a Project Development Worker, and a group of volunteers (three of whom are our older young people); further details at http://communityatne66.co.uk/meet-the-team.
